The average American family takes home 1,500 plastic bags a year. That is 4.1 plastic bags a day, and 28.8 bags a week.

14 bags of plastic is equivalent of enough gas to drive 1 mile. That means we use the equivalent of 2 miles of gas on plastic bags every week. And that's just one family.

When you sign up to bring your own bags shopping you save on average 12 plastic bags per trip that would otherwise end up in landfills. (1)

Only 1% of the Earths water is usable. Water is a finite source meaning that one day we could run out. On average Americans use 575 litres of water each day. Just imagine a room full of 575 liter water bottles. Look at these statistics:

•    one bath uses about 80 liters of water •    when you flush it uses uses 9 liters •    one full load in the washing machine uses anything between 50 and 100 liters •    a five-minute shower uses 45 liters

When you sign up to save as much water as you can for a week by taking shorter showers, making sure to only wash your clothes on a full load, by not rinsing your dishes before putting them in the washing machine, and checking and fixing any leaks in your home, you can reduce that number by about 190 liters. The Average American uses 167 plastic water bottles a year (3). America alone uses 38 million water bottles a year. By buying and using a reusable water bottle you can get rid of that unnecessary waste completely.

By using a water bottle you save about 3-4 water bottles a week (and you'll probably drink more water :) )

Even though LED light bulbs are more expensive than incandescent light bulbs, they can save you more money in the long run! LED light bulbs last up to 10 years. By not buying replacement light bulbs, you can save up to $1,000 dollars. LED light bulbs also don't emit high levels of heat and uses their energy more efficiently, while incandescent light bulbs waste 90% of their energy on heat. (4)

When you use a LED light bulb you waste less energy, reduce waste, and save money.

Many People think that the actions of one person won't make a difference. But every person counts in this race to help the earth. By reusing water bottles, bringing your own grocery bags, turning off water, and replacing light bulbs you already have saved your own corner of the world.

With recent initiatives to avoid going out in public as much as possible, it is the best time to make the most of the space we have at home. Quarantine is the perfect place to start creating sustainable and eco-friendly habits at home. With just a few steps, you can create your own compost bin. With this bin you will:

1. Cut down on food waste, and the amount of waste that goes to landfills.

2. Create a way to harvest richer soil that will enrich plants

1. Choose a space that’s at least three square feet. You can create your own (it should be about three feet tall) or find one at your local hardware store.

2. Place your food scraps in the bin. You can place just about any organic materials in the bin. Also, be sure that there is an even mix between dry scraps and wet scraps. More details about this can be found through the link at the end of the article.

3. Stir the waste regularly and add water as needed.

4. After a few weeks, your compost will turn into rich soil that can be added to your garden or given to another garden.

Use your time at home to give back to the Earth that takes such good care of us all! Best of luck with your compost bin! For more detailed and instructions and further information about composting, check out this website:
